Guide to Paints for Wooden Kids' Toys & Furniture

Dec 23, 2025

As a manufacturer specializing in wooden kids' toys and furniture, we understand that safety and quality are the top priorities for parents and retailers.

Common Types of Paints for Wooden Kids' Toys & Furniture

When selecting paints for wooden children's products, we prioritize non-toxicity, durability, and environmental friendliness. Here are the most widely used and reliable paint types in the industry:

1. Water-Based Varnish (Polyurethane Dispersions Paint)

Water-based Varnish is the most popular choice for wooden kids' toys and furniture, and it's also the primary paint type we use in our factory.

Water-based lacquer is a high-performance water-based paint, which is an upgraded option for products that require higher wear resistance.

Core Features:

It retains the non-toxic and low-odor advantages of water-based acrylic paint but has a harder and more scratch-resistant paint film.
The transparency is excellent-when used as a clear coat, it can well show the natural texture of wood; when tinted, it has a glossy and smooth finish.

It also has good water resistance, making it suitable for products that may come into contact with water occasionally (such as wooden snack tables).

Suitable Scenarios: High-end wooden furniture (such as children's wardrobes and toy storage cabinets) and toys that need frequent use and wear resistance (such as wooden puzzle boards and activity tables).

2. Melamine Resin Paint (Triamine-Based Paint)

Melamine resin paint, commonly referred to as "triamine paint" in the industry, is a type of thermosetting paint made from melamine resin as the main film-forming substance.

It is widely used in wooden furniture scenarios that require high hardness and wear resistance, including partial children's furniture.

Core Features:

It has extremely high surface hardness (far exceeding water-based acrylic paint and water-based lacquer), excellent scratch resistance and impact resistance, and is not easy to be damaged even by frequent collisions and scratches-this is its most prominent advantage.

It also has strong stain resistance; common stains such as juice and ink can be easily wiped off without leaving marks. Additionally, it has good heat resistance and water resistance, and the paint film is smooth and flat with a high-gloss or matte finish.

However, it should be noted that traditional melamine resin paint has a higher VOC content during construction, so we only use modified low-VOC melamine resin paint that meets children's product safety standards in our factory.

Its brittleness is slightly higher than other water-based paints, and it is not suitable for products with complex curved surfaces (it is easier to crack when bending).

For wooden kids' toys and furniture, paint certifications are the key to proving safety. The following are the most authoritative and recognized certifications globally:

1. EN 71-3 (European Standard)

This is a mandatory standard for toys sold in the European Union, focusing on the migration limits of 19 heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic) in toy materials. Paints that pass EN 71-3 certification ensure that even if children bite or touch the product, the heavy metal content released is far below the dangerous level. Our factory's all export-oriented products use paints that meet EN 71-3 standards.

2. ASTM F963 (American Standard)

The core safety standard for toys in the United States, which also strictly restricts the content of heavy metals, phthalates, and other harmful substances in paints. For wooden toys exported to the U.S., passing ASTM F963 certification is a necessary condition.
